Returns run from the last close on or before the start of each period and are not annualised. Values marked TRI are total return indices, which add back dividends, so their levels are higher than the price index quoted on TV and their returns slightly higher; the Sensex is the price index. ETF prices are adjusted for dividends. “This year” runs from the last close of the previous year. Past performance does not indicate future returns.
Questions
How current are these numbers?
Each row shows the date of its last close. Indian index values come from PulseLabs and world market, gold, silver and bitcoin prices from Financial Modeling Prep, both end of day. The page checks for new closes every hour. When a market's newest data is more than four days old, its section says so and shows the date of the latest data we have.
Why are world markets shown through ETFs?
Index providers license their index values separately. An ETF that tracks the index is a price anyone can trade, and its moves stay close to the index after the fund's small yearly fee. The prices are in US dollars, so for a market outside the US they include the currency move against the dollar.
Why do some cells say n/a?
A return needs a closing value close to the start of the period. If the data has a gap around that date, we leave the cell blank rather than measure from a different day.
What does a one week move tell a long term investor?
Not much about the next ten years. A broad index can rise or fall several percent in a week with no change in the companies it holds. The 1 year column and the chart give more context, and a fund's category page shows how it has done over 3, 5 and 10 years.
